For a shamefully bloody example of how little single issue identity politics can mean, check out the unity of supporters and opponents of same sex marriage, supporters and opponents of abortion, and supporters and opponents of every other divisive issue clouding the minds of a population kept from acting as a democratic majority, we need look no further than the disgrace of this government’s Congress voting to approve and finance the current Israeli slaughter in Gaza.
Note that all our taxes, without exception for straight, gay, people of color, people of no color, Catholics, Jews, Mormons, Baptists, agnostics, atheists and those somehow in between are used to finance the apartheid state that continues to murder with impunity, while Congress applauds its massacres as “defense” against a menace presented by people fighting for a homeland stolen from them by invaders.
Note also that alleged liberals, alleged conservatives and alleged moderates unite as one. The Tea Party conservative right to the right of the Republican conservative right? Viva Israel! The progressive pseudo left of the Democratic Party, left of the liberal left of that party? Viva Israel! The black, women’s, Latino and assorted other alleged group/caucuses divided by their employers and financers to maintain minority rule by the rich? Viva Israel! It should make us all so proud of our democracy, especially those among us who will march off to the polls and vote for what they think represents a difference at the next opportunity to rubber stamp what corporate capital and individual wealth dictate are our choices.
And while this farce continues, massacres go on all over the world to perpetuate a debased system of political economics that threatens the entire planet, but nowhere with the bloody malignancy displayed in what was once Palestine and became Israel. And the horror of that reality would stop in a microsecond if the USA were to make it so by ending its racist support for a regime that follows neatly in the footsteps of our own origins in nearly destroying a native population to create our own.
We got away with it hundreds of years ago, but with an arrogance to redefine chutzpah, Israel has attempted it in modern times and succeeded against all moral, intellectual and political standards, simply by killing, ethnically cleansing, and stealing land, all with the passionate support of the USA’s political class, financed by American dollars that buy continued support for Israel the way a john’s dollars buy the compliance of a sex worker. This political pimping and whoring cannot and will not go on forever, but how much more can the people of a nation with absolutely no connection to the Nazi assault on European Jews suffer before that part of the world not purchased by blood money, or ignorant due to its own suffering says: enough, already!
More than a thousand Gaza citizens have been murdered as this is written, with only a relative handful being armed opponents of the regime. And still, major media and politicians are either silent or boisterously waving the Israeli flag as if it were their own. They would be more honest to wave their bankbooks and political paychecks for performance that would be judged as treason if it were exercised for any other foreign country.
And all this goes on while the same media and politicians rave on about the alleged guilt of Putin, Russia and the evil empire that was once communist and now is capitalist but still operates as an inducer of military spending in the trillions while thousands of Americans live in the streets and millions pay taxes for the warfare state that benefits so few at such cost for so many. How long can this continue?
Not much longer, and the growth in criticism for the anti-human horror has expanded all over the world and may yet act as a catalyst in a global demand for democracy that will end injustice and economic slavery for all and not just some. But there has to be a beginning to that global turnaround and it had better be that we face the ugly reality of Palestine before that ugliness unleashes further horrors not only in Gaza, the West Bank and all of Palestine—which is the real occupied territory—but that will bring them home to us in a fashion to make the 9/11 attacks seem almost benign by comparison.
Let’s not wait for someone to be driven over the edge and walk into a large place with a small nuke in a satchel, or aim a nuclear weapon armed drone at us the way we aim drones at others, or some other act of perverse sadism that will be provoked by the politics of mass murder currently still accepted by too many of us as simple geopolitics and state craft.
Our system is in a state of slow but steady breakdown and the pace is speeding up. Some will continue to profit and acquire more billions and there will remain a trickle down to professionals and others serving them. But it cannot last. The rich are growing richer and smaller in number while the upper middle class is often struggling to remain so, and what was the middle is expanding its debt to merely survive. More important, the greater population and environment are sinking fast under the same short-sighted policies that destroy long-term life supports for short-term profits. That is the same system that is murdering Palestinians at temporary profit for some Israelis and Americans, but to all our ultimate loss and potential doom. Wake up, act up and end this brutality and maybe move closer to ending all brutality provoked by the economy of profit for only some and loss, ever greater, for almost all.
